THE STORY BEHIND SOAPSTANDLE

When a Small Problem Sparked a Better Idea

The idea for SoapStandle didn’t arrive in a lightning-bolt “Eureka!” moment. It was more of an “oh… that hurts” moment.

Founder Jimmy Gould was dealing with a bad hip at the time (now happily replaced). One day in the shower he dropped the bar of soap — and discovered that picking it up was, quite literally, a pain.

There had to be a better way to keep a bar of soap from slipping out of your hand.

So Jimmy did what many inventors do: he started tinkering.

Using modeling clay, he shaped a small oval form with raised points on one side, baked it in the oven, and attached it to a bar of soap. The result was simple but effective — the added contact point created a natural grip, helping prevent the soap from slipping.

But something else happened that he didn’t expect.

When the soap sat between showers, there was no goo forming underneath it. Even better, the bar was lasting longer.

That’s when the real idea behind SoapStandle started to take shape.

Jimmy assumed something this practical must already exist. After all, soap has been around for centuries. But after searching stores and the internet, he couldn’t find anything like it.

So he began experimenting further — creating early versions with a 3D printer and giving them to friends to try.

Their feedback confirmed what he had already discovered: it worked.

Encouraged by those early results, Jimmy pursued a patent and began developing the small device that would become SoapStandle.

Sometimes innovation doesn’t start with a grand plan.

Sometimes it starts with dropping the soap.

“Some people have said that this small design is ‘genius’ in how such a simple device can profoundly impact something that’s so much a part of our shared history — and as basic — as a bar of soap. I love to hear that. They’re wrong on the ‘genius thing,’ but I still love to hear it.

What is true, is that there is nothing else like this that attaches to the bar, that is as effective, that impacts on a personal level (doesn’t slip/no mess) and can touch everyone’s life. With 270+ million bar soap users in the US alone, 5+ billion globally, we have a lot of work to do to Stop the Goo.”

— Jimmy Gould, Founder

After years of seeing unnecessary waste — both in melted soap and plastic bottles — SoapStandle was developed to offer a simple, effective solution. A small product designed to solve a daily problem.
